「いや、いまふと思いついたんですが、都築克彦が殺害された部屋ですがね。いまあの部屋はどうなってます？ じつはぼくこんやにもあの部屋を調べてみたいんですが、ぜったいにひとにしられたくないんです。ことに藤野磯吉にはね」 スポンジである。 湖に沿って歩いていく。ときどき湖岸で釣竿を伸ば している釣り人を見かけるくらいでほとんど人に出会わない。車の量も少ない。中禅寺湖は有名な観光地だからもっと混雑したところかと思っていたが、意外と寂しい。湖岸の旅館街も派手派手しさはなかったし、旅館街をすぎるともう林ばかりである。私の泊った宿は旅館街からバスで十分ほど行ったところに ある林の中の一軒家でちょっとした別荘という感じだった。このあたりは国立公園のなかだから自然保護が最優先されているのだろう、旅館街にネオンはなかったし、歓楽地につきもののストリップ小屋のような遊興施設もまったくなかった。湖の周囲は静まりかえっていて、観光地というより山の中の小さな町 の雰囲気だ。モーテルやけばけばしいレストランもない。森の生活が好きな西洋人が湖畔に別荘を持っているのもわかる気がする。
